Ex-UCLA player joins United

-

New Mexico United’s youth movement continued Thursday as the club made midfielder Jose Sosa its latest addition.

A 5-foot-6 midfielder, Sosa played the last three years at UCLA where he was a second-team All-Pac 12 selection last season. He also played for Pacific for one year, earning West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team honors.

Sosa joined NMU as a trialist during the preseason and impressed the coaching staff enough to earn an official roster spot.

CAPTAINS: Midfielder Sam Hamilton will serve as United’s primary captain, taking over the role based on a vote of players and at the urging of previous captain Josh Suggs. Midfielder Justin Portillo and defender Kalen Ryden will serve as vice captains, assuming the role when Hamilton is not on the field. The team opens the United Soccer League Championship season Saturday in Miami.

Etc. … NBA:

Michael Jordan’s tenure as majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets is reportedly near its end. He is in serious talks to sell a huge stake of the franchise to a group that includes Hornets minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnall, according to ESPN.

UNM BASEBALL:

The Lobos (11-5, 2-1 Mountain West) are in Fresno to take on Fresno State (8-7, 2-3) for a three-game series. The opener is Friday (7:05 p.m., themw.com).

GOLF: In Palm Harbor, Fla., Ryan Brehm turned a good round into a memorable one Thursday, making a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole at Innisbrook for a 5-under 66 that led to a three-way share of the lead at the Valspar Championship. Stephan Jaeger also had a 66; Adam Schenk joined them with the low score in the afternoon on the Copperhead course.
