Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin the oldest of four, he promised his mother he would leave the cold as soon as he turned 18. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948 where he lettered in football, basketball and boxing. He enlisted in the US Navy, was stationed in California where he also went to college at the University of California, Berkeley, and took evening classes. He met his first wife, Shirlie MacMillen there, and they moved to sunny Albuquerque, NM to start a family. He graduated from the University of New Mexico with a government and business degree and became a Fuller Brush man. A recognized sales leader, he transferred those skills to insurance and established his career as a life insurance salesman where he was a recipient of countless awards. He eventually started his own agency and was an independent agentspecializing in car insurance. He cared deeply about his community and held offices in the Jaycees, the Heart Association, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, and the state legislature. He was a member of the House of Representatives in the 70’s and enjoyed all things political. He was very active in the sports scene in New Mexico. As a life-long Packer fan, he wanted to bring his love of football to Albuquerque so he used his sales and organizational skills to establish a semipro football team, The Thunderbirds. He was a fan of boxing and was very involved in the Golden Gloves. He relished attending Lobo basketball games and was a season ticket holder for over 30 years. John’s Catholic faith was very important to him and he served as an usher at Queen of Heaven Church for over 50 years. John will be remembered as a man of integrity, who worked hard. He lived a long and fulfilling life and his legacy will continue to live on though his grandchildren.

Special thanks from the family for his caretaker Gina for her compassion and kindness.
