Oil, natural gas industry important to NM
December’s jobs report paints a nice picture of America’s economic future, as discussed in “U.S. employers add a surprisingly strong 216,000 jobs in a sign of continued economic strength” (Jan. 6). The economic growth and increase in job opportunities reflect the continued commitment of U.S. workers and businesses to making our economy stronger than ever.
In New Mexico, oil and natural gas are a powerhouse of economic development. The oil and natural gas industry supports jobs for over 92,000 New Mexicans, equivalent to 8.5% of state employment, and has an economic impact of $16.6 billion. This includes direct employees, supply chain workers and other jobs throughout the economy. Nationally, this sector supports almost 11 million jobs and contributes nearly $2 trillion to the U.S. economy.
New Mexico is a global leader in energy development. In fact, just one county in New Mexico produces more crude oil per day than five OPEC member countries. To keep America’s role as the global leader in oil and natural gas production, we need policies that support energy development.
First, Congress could modernize America’s permitting process and remove roadblocks for all kinds of energy infrastructure. Next, the Biden administration could open more federal lands to oil and natural gas leases to help ensure future generations benefit from our abundant energy resources. Finally, policymakers could stop imposing burdensome regulations that jeopardize future energy development.
Leaders in Santa Fe and Washington should support smart policies to strengthen New Mexico’s economy and energy industry.
