Lobos land Old Dominion transfer DL

UNM hosting walk-on tryouts in early March

- BY SEAN REIDER

Got room for one more? After releasing details regarding 19 new transfers last week, UNM on Tuesday announced the addition of former Old Dominion defensive lineman Devin Brandt-Epps.

Brandt-Epps tallied 19 total tackles over nine games in 2023, making a season-high seven tackles in a 17-13 win over Southern Miss on Oct. 7. Listed at 6-foot-3, 292 pounds, the Muskogee, Okla., native joins the Lobos for his fifthyear senior season with 84 career tackles (10.5 for a loss) and three sacks at Old Dominion after starting his collegiate career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

In his lone season with the Golden Norsemen, Brandt-Epps led the team with 8.5 tackles for loss and finished fifth with 30 total tackles in eight games.

The announcement of BrandtEpps’ addition pushes the total number of roster additions since Bronco Mendenhall was hired in early December to 20. The transfer portal’s fall window closed on Jan. 4, but players who entered during that month-long period — such as Brandt-Epps — can still land at a new school anytime.

The portal’s spring window opens on April 16 and closes on April 30. UNM began offseason workouts last week and has not announced a date for the start of spring practice.

WALK-ONS WELCOME: UNM might not be adding only transfers, however.

Via the team’s X, formerly Twitter, account, UNM put out a call for walk-on tryouts on Tuesday. Tryouts are open only to students currently enrolled at UNM and will be held at University Stadium on March 6.

Prospective walk-ons need to complete a provided tryout form; produce proof of medical insurance and a completed physical within the last year; provide results from a sickle-cell test; and gain a physician’s clearance for a temporary tryout.

Questions regarding the tryout process can be sent to UNM director of scouting Evan Butts at ebutts@unm.edu.
