What you need to know about San Diego State:

The Aztecs have climbed into contention for a high Mountain West tournament seed, winning four of five including a 60-53 victory over UNM on Feb. 7. But SDSU has arguably the toughest finishing schedule in the league with games at UNM, UNLV and home against Wyoming. The road has not been kind to the Aztecs, who are 5-6 away from Viejas Arena. Still, they’re a dangerous bunch, ranking second in the MWC in scoring (67.5 ppg) in conference games in spite of attempting the fewest 3-pointers. Like UNM, SDSU relies heavily on its starters and Quezada and Villalobos are a formidable 1-2 punch. Both rank among the conference leaders in scoring and rebounding. Lewis is the primary 3-point threat with 62 makes this season — one fewer than UNM’s Cumber, who ranks second in the league.

What you need to know about New Mexico: The Lobos improved their odds of landing a high MWC tournament seed with Saturday’s 59-58 win at Wyoming, but Wednesday’s matchup with SDSU is equally key. UNM is tied with Boise State for second place with the Aztecs just a game behind. New Mexico continues to win with defense, having held its last four opponents under 60 points. That pushes its season average to 59.8 points allowed per game. Stingy defense has allowed the Lobos to weather some unsightly scoring droughts but Bradbury would love to see more consistent production. UNM has exceeded 60 points just twice in its last six games. Rebounding has become a strength for the Lobos, who have four players (Kohl, Cumber, Augmon, Reus) ranked among the MWC’s top 17. In league play, UNM ranks first in defensive rebounds per game (30.5)
