We need a 311 system with accountability

-

The proverb “For want of a nail” describes that seemingly unimportant acts or omissions can have grave and unforeseen consequences.

It’s no secret that Albuquerque and New Mexico have serious problems. They have been the bane of our largest cities and our state too long.

When did they begin and who caused them? They began as small points of irritation that didn’t concern many and because they were not addressed early on, they have grown into monsters that affect a great many of us every day. We discuss them incessantly. The topic is ABQ’s and NM’s favorite whine. We are ashamed that no one can affect a resolution, not the governor, mayor, law enforcement, the courts, etc. A no-brainer?

Our community must act to remove this cancer. Applied solutions begin with us as individuals, spread to our neighborhoods, and then our towns and cities.

Organized watches and reporting systems from any individual, neighborhood associations, and neighborhood watch would call phone numbers established for this purpose.

Our 311 system is not enough. A specific number is needed. Photographs can be included in the reports. A return call of acknowledgement would be required. Reports would be published regularly in the local newspaper to keep tabs and identify patterns.

Crime, dangerous driving, outdoor encampments, solicitation in medians, dangerous potholes and street conditions, and unusual suspicious activity in an area are all examples of reportable events. Participating groups can create additional criteria.

Political and law enforcement agencies must step up. Their failure to take action and produce results would be cause for their removal.

We, the average everyday citizens, must actively participate to solve these problems and take back our communities.

It appears that no one else can do it. We must stand up for ourselves and our community. DAVID W. CASAS Albuquerque
