Man accused of killing wife caught in Mexico
Oscar Renee Sandoval, 57, faces an open count of murder in the shooting
A man accused of killing his wife earlier this month in Mesilla was arrested in Mexico.
Oscar Renee Sandoval, 57, is charged with first-degree murder, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. He is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
According to a Marshals Service news release, Sandoval was arrested on Tuesday by Mexican authorities after leads to find him were developed through a multiagency effort. He had been on the run since the fatal shooting of his wife, Sheireen Aljibury.
On April 1, the Mesilla Marshal’s Office responded to a call about a woman — later identified as Aljibury — shot on University Avenue, near Stanford Street, according to the statement of probable cause filed in Doña Ana County Magistrate Court. Doña Ana County deputies rendered first aid to the woman, and other first responders continued life-saving measures, but she died at the scene.
A witness told deputies she was heading east on University when she saw a woman get out of an SUV, run in front of the witness’ car and tell them, “I’ve been shot.”
According to the probable cause statement, a witness said she stayed inside her vehicle after seeing Sandoval chase after and point a handgun at the woman. The witness told deputies she heard four shots before the victim fell onto the dirt shoulder off University.
The court document said Sandoval turned toward the witness, who was sitting in her vehicle and “feared for her life.” Sandoval then got into his vehicle and drove away. The witness told deputies they provided aid to the woman and called 911.
The U.S. Marshals District of New Mexico Southwest Fugitive Team took the case and received assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, Mesilla Marshals and Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshals Service said.
The investigation led authorities to Ciudad Juárez, where Mexican authorities arrested Sandoval, according to the U.S. Marshals. The agency said Sandoval was extradited on Wednesday and placed into Marshals Service custody at the Santa Teresa port of entry.
