We all know doing crosswords and meditating are great ways to keep your brain happy, but new research suggests that your gut may have a role to play as well. The findings show that migraines and tension headaches are likely to be genetically linked to the gut disease known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). After rounding up groups of people with tension headaches, migraines, and IBS, scientists studied the participants’ genes. They discovered both IBS and migraine sufferers had a unique gene when compared with people who were free from both. The gene in question is critical to serotonin reception. Since the causes of these chronic conditions are mysteries, this gene could be the key to understanding and developing a treatment strategy for IBS and migraine sufferers.
