There’s a new fish in the pond, and this one’s not quite like the oth­ers. Last Novem­ber, the FDA ap­proved GM salmon to be safe to eat and as nu­tri­tious as any non-GE Atlantic species. The franken­fish grows more rapidly than its nat­u­ral cousins due to an rDNA con­struct com­posed of the growth hor­mone gene of Chi­nook salmon and con­trolled by a DNA se­quence from an en­tirely dif­fer­ent fish—the ocean pout. Man­u­fac­tur­ers are still not re­quired to la­bel food as con­tain­ing GMOs.
