ROBERT LANGE STUDIOS
“As the city grows from predominantly a tourist destination and shifts into a tech and high-end manufacturing hub, we’ve seen a steading shift away from more traditional regional art and toward contemporary art.” — Robert Lange, artist and owner, Robert
2 Queen Street, Charleston, SC 29401 (843) 805-8052 www.robertlangestudios.com Robert Lange Studios is a gallery space run by artists and owners Megan and Robert Lange. As such, it is dedicated to the development of an ongoing dialogue between artists from a range of artistic disciplines at differing levels of their careers. In addition to the gallery’s 6,000-square-foot space, in 2014 RLS expanded to curate the exhibition space at The Vendue, Charleston’s art hotel. The hotel’s public areas feature two to three exhibitions per year, presenting among the best in progressive art. Owners Jon and Lisa Weitz have continued their dedication to the arts by recently purchasing a number of works for the hotel’s permanent collection.
Robert Lange Studios also offers the RLS Residency program, which invites international and national artists to live in a residency space at the gallery. Working with the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art by housing visiting artists who are creating exhibits for the Halsey Gallery, the aim is to facilitate creative networks and connect the local art community with the global sphere of contemporary art.
In November the gallery will host a solo show for landscape artist Brett Scheifflee, who says, “Like everything we make, desire precedes existence, it seems a love of the soft and subtle must have occupied the thoughts of artists for many, many years and we should be thankful it did, as we now have oil paints.” Kerry Simmons’ December solo show, will see the artist primarily working in egg tempura, a paint tradition reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth. The beginning of 2019 starts with a solo show by Matt Story highlighting contemporary underwater figurative painting.
