Simon Kenevan
It has been a very exciting journey for the John C. Doyle Art Gallery to add new artists since 2014, as John Doyle specifically wished for his legacy gallery. Its newest addition, seascape painter Simon Kenevan, is a special partnership.
Kenevan and Doyle were friends, and had a great respect for each other, both as gentleman and as kindred artists. Since the gallery began representing his work in January, it has received constant love from visitors for his breathtaking scenes of the ocean meeting the sky. “One of my favorite responses from a recent visitor to Simon’s work was ‘I just want to live in that painting,’” says gallery director Angela Stump.
Every painting is sourced from an original photograph that Kenevan takes himself, mostly along the eastern coast of the
United States, as well as many Lowcountry spots that are special to collectors in the Charleston area and the countless surrounding islands. Each subsequent painting has its own resonance, unique to each and every viewer.
“I was born near the ocean,” Kenevan says. “To paint the place where the elements meet. Sky, sea, land. The light, the weather, the space. The peace, the tempest. I am a grain of sand in the great scheme of things. That’s all I am. I’m just being tossed around in this life like everybody else, like a grain of sand in the sea. I like to be reminded of that fact. It’s good to feel the humbling power of Mother Nature.”
