Artist Focus Pages
Jennifer St. James is an artist who specializes in figurative art, portraiture and still life painting. After receiving her degree in advertising with an emphasis on technology, arts and media from the University of Colorado at Boulder, St. James had the desire to return to the arts. She attended Schissler Academy of Fine Arts—a classical art school that uses the teaching approach of the Old masters—where she studied representational art with a focus on the human figure, portraiture and animals. It was there that she won the title of best student portfolio. She also studied under John Reger from
The Ryder Studio.
Using classical techniques, she portrays contemporary subject matter in oil and charcoal. She is inspired by the life and history of her subject matter, which she captures in her art. “I am inspired most by people and animals as they tell a story with every part of themselves—the eyes, hands, posture,” St. James says. “These characteristics and the beauty of my subjects are what drive me to paint them. I use different techniques depending on my subject matter; from glazing to alla prima painting; the subject matter informs me as I paint, and often times I will change both my technique and style to represent the subject as I see and feel it. It is my goal to capture the life, history and beauty of my subject matter.”
St. James’ work is represented at Independence Gallery in Loveland, Colorado. She currently works as a commission artist in Windsor, Colorado.
