Cove Street Arts is a multimedia space, celebrating Maine’s storied and outsized place in American art history. Its mission is to promote contemporary Maine art, contribute to the Maine arts economy and engage meaningfully with Portland’s vibrant and growing East Bayside community by offering workshops and art-centered educational opportunities. The 8,000-square-foot exhibition space is dedicated to showing the incredible breadth and depth of fine art being made in Maine and demonstrating how vibrant and vital Maine’s art scene continues to be.
The space includes multiple galleries and showrooms, a bookstore and small works gallery, an event and workshop space and a full-size, retractable movie screen for video art installations and film screenings.
Upcoming shows that run into August and September include Ian Trask’s Strange Histories. Using vintage slides, Trask creates his own stories by layering multiple slides into a photomontage—an image of Stonehenge might interrupt a beach scene or baseball players could be transported into an African safari. In addition, there will be a solo exhibition held for Charlie Hewitt, nationally renowned painter, sculptor and printmaker, born and based in Maine. Hewitt has artwork in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of
Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Library of Congress, Portland Museum of Art and Bates College Museum of Art.
