Colorful Designs
Zimmer was the Third Prize winner of International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 110, Abstract/Experimental Art.
About seven years ago, Evie Zimmer had “an awakening” and made the conscious decision to paint what she wanted rather than please others with her art. Prior to this, Zimmer had been a portrait artist, but had always wanted to paint more design-based works. “Since then, my artwork has been evolving and becoming more refined,” she says. “More recently, I have begun to add more floral elements and I absolutely love painting this way.”
On the surface, many may see Zimmer’s paintings as strictly abstract but she prefers to describe them as “abstract-realism” because each mark is intentional and she has an image in mind before brush meets canvas. “I love optical art and pop art. That combined with a love of nature and the intricate fractal patterns found within it have greatly influenced my work,” she says. “I always have my camera ready to go and take tons of pictures of anything that piques my interest. It’s like I have a filter that sees everything as a possible subject or color combination.”
One of her recent paintings, La Corona, was inspired by tiger lilies, while Lush is reminiscent of the garden terrain she found when spending time in Florida last year. Along with design, color and contrast are important to her paintings, as seen in these
works. All of Zimmer’s colors are painted directly on the white canvas to ensure they are “true and bright,” and typically, instead of using black, she makes her darks by mixing colors on her palette.
“My creative process is a meditation to me,” Zimmer adds. “Some call it ‘meta-art’ as my spirituality seems to radiate from my work. Creating art has been my savior through childhood difficulty, and my calming peace in adulthood.”
