The American Impressionist Society has built its enduring legacy on promoting the tradition of impressionistic art—identified by its loose brushwork and vibrant imagery. This September, the group will celebrate a milestone with its 20th annual National Juried Exhibition, which will take place at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City. The event, happening September 19 through October 2, will feature 150 juried paintings.

The show kicks off September 19 with the opening

reception and awards reception from 6 to 9 p.m. The event, which is free to the public, will offer the first look at the show in its entirety, showcasing the variety in technique and subject matter. It also will allow this year’s show judge, Kevin Macpherson, the opportunity to present his selections for the award winning works of art.

In the exhibition will be landscapes, figurative paintings, cityscapes, wildlife art and more, which allows collectors to find something to suit their interests. This

year’s show will include dynamic pieces by Signature members such as Nancy Boren, Michele Byrne, Julie Davis, Rick J. Delanty and Lindsey Bittner Graham, as well as works by associate members like Lon Brauer, Kelly Brewer, Chris Kling, Laura Lewis, Marko Marino, Laurie Meyer, Pamela B. Padgett, Fay Shutzer and Jing Zhao.

Brewer’s painting Double Dip depicts two cows wading in a waterway. The artist finds that bovines have distinct personalities, and enjoys translating that universal connection to her canvases. “Just like us, their moods seem dependent upon context. The cow is something everyone seems to have in common. It’s not necessarily my motivation for painting cows, but unlike certain subject matter that only some people relate to, the cow is universal and relational,” she says. “The cow was one of the first things I learned to paint well, and even now, after

years of practicing, learning new and different techniques, and expanding my portfolio to a variety of subjects, places, people and things, the cow is my comfort food. I love painting them.”

Sydney, by Lewis, is a sweet portrait of a young girl—the artist’s granddaughter, to be exact—that is brought to life through energetic strokes that include soft pink hues. “The lighting on her face produces a glowing mood,” says the artist. “Using palette knives softened by brushstrokes on top produced the effects you see.”

Last September, Padgett and her husband, John, visited Paris and the coast of Normandy. Seeing the array of French Impressionist works at museums and experiencing Giverny firsthand brought a sense of exhilaration to the artist. However, the reverence she felt visiting Normandy translated into her juried piece Normandy Cliffs at Peace. “There is just so much beauty in France,” she says. “But Normandy is a sacred place. World War II has always held my interest. The sacrifices made on that narrow strip of French soil by so many to liberate all of Western Europe is beyond description. Standing on that beach was such a privilege.”

Along with the juried works of art, the show will include 20 paintings by Master members of the group.
