International Appeal
Haven Gallery brought its unique mix of realistic and surrealistic art to Paris-based District 13 Art Fair this September.
Paris is considered a mecca of fine art because some of the world’s most recognized art museums are located within its city limits. And in those museums are some of the most beloved paintings of all time, including the most recognized portrait, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, at the Louvre. Visitors come in waves to the city to experience the culture and the architectural beauty as well as its abundance of paintings and sculptures. Last year a new event was launched in the city, the District 13 Art Fair.
Instead of having an eye on the past, this event has focused on urban contemporary art to pinpoint what is available and trending right now. The 2019 iteration of the fair opened September 25 at the Hôtel
Drouot auction house with a Press & VIP Preview followed by a private viewing. It then was open to the public from September 26 through 29.
Among the 30 international galleries participating in the event was Haven Gallery, which is located in Northport, New York. District 13 Art Fair marked the first time the gallery was heading to an international art fair. To celebrate the occasion, the gallery put together a sampling of artwork by some of its most recognized artists to entice visitors. “The artists included are many of our most seasoned whom regularly make up our art fair curation,” says gallery owner Erica Berkowitz.
The art focused on realistic and surrealistic pieces that push the boundaries of creativity. Included were works such as Dorian Vallejo’s The Conversational Hunt and Amy Sol’s In Nocte, while paintings by Travis Louie featuring his ever-growing cast of characters added a whimsical nod.
There were also works on view from Olga Esther, Pandora Young, Valency Genis, Mall, Naoto Hattori, David Lipson, Jon Jaylo, Mark Garro, Joseph Weinreb, Kukula, Chris Mars, Julie Filipenko and Stan Manoukian, among others.
