Dean Mitchell was born in 1957 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and reared in Quincy, Florida. A graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design, Mitchell is well known for his figurative works, landscapes and still lifes. In addition to being considered a master of watercolor, he is accomplished in other mediums, including egg tempera, oil, acrylic and pastel.

Inspired by artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, Edward Hopper and Lucian Freud, Mitchell has developed his own unique voice. Drawn to bold shapes of light and shadow, painting for the artist is emotionally driven by mood and cultural events. He is an artist who will continue to change and explore with humanity at the forefront of his efforts.

“I am an artist who loves different forms of visual expression; drawn to people, places and spaces that have a timeless feel to them,” Mitchell says. “Their presence is filled with life, beauty, isolation and the ghosts of the flawed parts of our fragile humanity. Labels mean absolutely nothing to me when it comes to style. To me all art is an abstraction and it is through size relationships, value and color shifts that duplicate our visual reality. Painting is a journey of discovery, an emotional process in search of content that requires a deeper more intuitive glance. Learned skills must become a mere extension of that communication but should always be challenged without formulaic approaches to tap into a unique part of the creative process. This takes maturity and a willingness to fail in order to find that emotional content that is so elusive.”
