Staircase

-

There are several ways to update the look of your staircase. If you think the railing will benefit from a refresh, try painting it (see page 77). You can also change the treads themselves. If your staircase has carpet, this is an especially great way to add farmhouse charm.

First, you’ll need to rip out the old carpet, as well as pull up any nails and staples. Depending on the condition of the wood underneath, you can either use the existing treads and risers (treads are the part you step on; risers are the vertical pieces), or install new ones over the existing wood. If you’re using the existing wood, strip any epoxy, then sand. If you’re putting in new treads and risers, install the pieces and caulk any gaps.

Finally comes the paint or stain. You can either stain the whole staircase for a natural wood look or paint the risers white, which adds a modern farmhouse vibe. When painting or staining, tape off the paint area and follow the manufacturer’s directions for the optimal number of coats and dry times.
