SMALL SPACES

-

Unlike many other design styles, hygge may be one of the few trends that is better suited for small spaces.

Here are three simple ways to make a small room more hygge.

1. KILL THE CLUTTER. Collecting mountains of cushions or knick-knacks could make a small space appear cluttered and even smaller. Instead, stick with small touches to fill empty spaces. “Make every square inch of space purposeful,” says featured designer Katie Rodgers. “It’s much easier to make a small space feel like home—just a few bits of character go a long way.”

2. PICK YOUR PATTERNS. Focus on patterns and colors that will help the small room feel like a cohesive whole.

If a large element like wallpaper is too much of a commitment, look for smaller patterns instead. Pick art you can connect to and display the pieces on your walls. Coordinate your textiles, such as curtains, upholstered furniture and throw pillows.

3. GO BACK TO NATURE. Many designers also like to gather inspiration from what they can see outside their homes. Reflect your natural scenery—whether it’s the ocean, a lake, the prairie or mountains— indoors to complement the surrounding nature. Fill vases with local wildflowers, add hues from outside to your color scheme and choose art that reflects your outdoors.
