HAVE YOURSELF A CLASSIC CHRISTMAS

Turn eyesores into blessings in disguise with holiday decorating tricks.

-

Decorations collected over time add classic Christmas charm to this Georgia home.

• COVER IT UP. Everyone’s home has an ugly bone or two. “For me, it’s at my fireplace,” Astra says. She fixes this with several décor signs in a cluster on her mantel. To anyone passing by, they look like a lovely décor statement, but the signs cover up two big vents Astra doesn’t want visible. “Year round, you’ll see signs on my mantel that I built literally just to hide those vents,” she says. Find ways you can cover eyesores in your own home as well.

• THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. If the eyesore you’re trying to hide can’t be covered by a few strategically placed signs, explore other options. Wrap an outdated railing in lights and ribbons, or lay a garland along the base of a windowsill to conceal a stained window track. If you don’t like a blunt doorway, soften the look with a wreath or curved garland draped above it.

• GUILT-FREE WALL DÉCOR. If your home or rental doesn’t allow nails and permanent changes, you can still add décor without causing damage. Command™ hooks stick to walls and peel off like they were never there. Paint them a cheerful red or use a large burlap ribbon to hide the plastic part.
