3 Ways to Add Texture to

YOUR HOLIDAY DÉCOR

-

Introducing different textures will help boost interest in your space—especially if you have a neutral color palette.

1. TEXTILES. First, think about what kinds of textures you’re drawn to. For Kim, it’s faux fur, knitted patterns and old books. Some of her pillows even have ruffled edges for a feminine touch. Once you know which textures you like, you can add them through a variety of textiles, including pillows, blankets, stockings, an upholstered chair or bench and rugs.

2. LAYERS. Layering is a simple way to achieve eye-catching texture. “I love layering bedding,” Kim says. “I have a duvet cover and then the ruffled king-sized comforter folded up at the foot of the bed.” She also layered a faux-fur rug on top of the bench to bring the theme to that area as well. “The bench has some tears in it, so it’s a way to use it and cover up the rips,” she says.

3. SPARKLE. We all need a bit of sparkle in our lives—especially at Christmas. The key is to add it in small doses scattered across a space. For example, Kim displayed glitter houses on her fireplace mantel, crystals on her candlesticks, a shimmering bauble garland on her headboard and sparkly-designed pillows on all seating surfaces. “Be thoughtful about where you’re adding it,” she says. “You don’t want it to look like you have tinsel thrown everywhere.”
