PROJECT HOUSE: THE FINAL REVEAL
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: We’re showcasing the entirety of our 2020 Project House outside Oklahoma City.
Over the past year, we’ve been chronicling the room-by-room progress of our 2020 Project House, and it’s come together so well. This has been a collaboration between American Farmhouse Style, our sister magazine Cottages & Bungalows, home builders J.J. and Lindsey Morris of Scissortail Homes and interior designer Rachel Shingleton of Pencil Shavings Studio. The custom home fuses farmhouse livability and cozy cottage vibes, and was built according to plan and on schedule, despite the pandemic.
“It’s so fun to watch this process,” says Victoria Van Vlear, American Farmhouse Style Brand Leader. “As a magazine editor, I usually just see the finished homes we feature. But getting to capture the whole process gives me so much more appreciation for the amount of work and effort that goes into building a home from scratch. Lindsey and Rachel added so much with their style and design ideas, and we had a great team to bring this dream farmhouse to the finish line.”
With the final touches in place, the home is officially sold. And now it’s finally the moment when we can unveil the Project House in its entirety.
A WARM WELCOME
The two-story, 2,333-square-foot home is located on the shores of Lake Eufaula in the lakeside resort town of Carlton Landing, Oklahoma. That meant a hospitable porch was essential. “With so many wonderful design features in the home, it’s difficult to pick just one; however, I adore the porches,” says Kelly McMaster, Cottages & Bungalows editor. “With the open, say-howdy-to-your-neighbor style front porch and the cozy, private side porch with the Cherokee Brick fireplace, I can imagine hours of coffee sipping and birdwatching by morning and s’mores in that fireplace by night.”
(top, left) Plenty of seating allows for parties and guests. Turned legs and casters on the sofa, as well as striped upholstered chairs, are nods to traditional farmhouse style. “Everything is easy textures, nothing too fancy,” Rachel says. “It’s all very natural and neutral.”

(bottom, left) Inspired by Scandinavian farmhouse design, a white oak fireplace feature wall inset with an electric fireplace from Touchstone Home Products creates a cozy, modern focal point in the living room. Two-over-two cased windows from Pella Windows add a clean yet traditional look.
(bottom, right) The space beneath the stairs turned into a tiny storage space with a mini sliding barn door, which is a unique feature Scissortail Homes always tries to incorporate. “It could be for storing books and toys as a reading nook or for a pet’s dog bed,” Lindsey says. “We’re always excited to see how each individual homeowner uses it.”
With a front porch and private side porch featuring an outdoor fireplace, the home is designed for year-round outdoor living. “That sprawling porch that wraps around is such a great element of farmhouse style,” says Rachel. “The board-and-batten siding look is a great mix of unfussy, approachable materials.” With Cherokee Brick accents and plenty of Pella windows, the indoor-outdoor feel works well for both the neighborhood and farmhouse living.
LIVING LARGE
The open plan of the first-floor living room, dining room and kitchen creates an ideal entertaining space. “We wanted it to feel like a gathering place, together and not separate,” says Lindsey. The living room and dining room are set up to comfortably fit 20 to 30 people, with two sofas upholstered in a durable fabric, four accent chairs and an expandable dining table with banquette seating. “The whole neutral living room with lightercolored sofas is a huge trend, but people think they can’t have that because kids or dogs will destroy them. These provide form and function,” says Rachel.
