Small Space STORAGE

Tips for finding storage areas to keep your home functional and neat.

-

• HIDDEN STORAGE.

Rather than fill space with storage cabinets, consider the spaces under beds and seating. You can buy or custom make furniture with built-in storage, so beds and sofas can open to reveal ample space for pillows or useful items you don’t want on display.

• SEMI-HIDDEN STORAGE.

For smaller items such as blankets and toys, store them in pretty baskets so they’re consolidated and within reach, yet hide away the clutter. You can store the baskets themselves underneath seating or organized on shelves, depending on whether you want them hidden or visible.

• HANGING STORAGE.

Wall height is your best friend in small spaces. Include plenty of shelving, hanging rods, hanging baskets or a mixture of all of them to keep your spaces organized. Whether you choose built-in or open shelves, secure your items before traveling if you’re in a traveling home. The kitchen in this Airstream has an open shelf and hanging rod for displaying décor and useful items. “No corner is spared attention, with a mix of old and new ceramics, art, baskets, and functional objects such as cutting boards and bowls and knives,” writes Oliver. Homeowner Bonnie also added floral wallpaper above her green velvet benches. “Don’t be afraid of pattern, color or texture in a small space,” writes Oliver. “Use them sparingly and with intention.” An efficient way to test a layout is to put tape on the floor and measure out your main furniture. Include your bed, table, sofa and any other larger pieces. This will help you determine if you have enough walking space and if you’ve allocated enough square footage for your bedroom, kitchen or living area. “Tiny layouts can be tricky, especially when layering in intricate and necessary systems that are specific to recreational vehicles,” writes Oliver. “Think about how you move within your current brick-and-mortar home. What areas and items do you find yourself gravitating to the most? Design your traveling home around those spaces.”

DESIGNED FOR YOU Because you have less space to work with, every design decision makes a huge impact on the style of the home, including the materials and color scheme. “Pay homage to the vintage year through your choice of materials, tones, and textures,” writes Oliver. “Fill it up with gathered objects, art, and books. Small spaces and traveling homes have limitations, but don’t let that stifle your creativity and artistry.” The upside is that it’s more feasible to incorporate high-end finishes when there’s less quantity to buy. “If your budget doesn’t allow for everything on your wish list, opt for a mix of high and low to achieve a polished look,” writes Oliver. Big or small, your home should reflect your personality and preferences. That way, you’ll feel at home no matter how far you travel.
