Roll ing DIY RACK

One of Christine Hyland’s favorite DIY projects is the rolling rack in her kitchen. Here are her steps to creating your own.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

• 20 8-foot 2”x 4” boards

• Skill saw

• Pocket hole kreg jig

• 3” pocket hole screws

• Drill

• Jigsaw

• 2 12-foot 1”x2” boards

• Box of 3” wood screws

• Wood stain of your choice

• 8 decorative L brackets for shelf (optional)

• 4 iron casters (optional)

• 8 hooks (optional)

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

1. First, assemble the five shelves. Decide the length you want and cut the 2” x 4” boards accordingly.

2. Each shelf is made from four 2”x4” boards laid side by side. Join them together by making pocket holes with the pocket hole kreg jig, then screwing the boards together with the drill. Repeat this step to make all the shelves.

3. After your shelves are built, use a jigsaw to notch out a 1” x 2” rectangle in each corner, where the upright boards will go. You’ll want the 2” sides of the boards to face toward the middle of the shelves.

4. With the drill and 3” wood screws, secure the 1” x 2” boards upright in the notches on all four corners of the bottom shelf.

5. Use the same method to secure the top shelf.

6. Use the same method to secure the middle shelves. (Get creative in this step by customizing what height you want for each shelf.)

7. After all the shelves are secure, use the remaining 1”x 2” boards to create an X shape along the back of the rack. Cut them to size and use your drill to secure them in place.

8. Stain the whole rack with the wood stain. Or alternatively, you can paint it if you’d prefer. Choose whatever stain or paint you think works best for your space.

9. After the stain has dried, it’s time for hardware. Fasten the decorative L brackets onto the outside of each corner of the top and bottom shelves. Fasten the caster wheels to the bottom.

10. If you want hooks for your rack, mount them to the side of your rack.

11. For safety, screw the rack into the wall by putting a screw through the X and into a stud in the wall.
