TIPS FOR Décor Styling

Instagrammer Ashley Knie finds different ways to style her décor by mixing items from different eras and purchasing new pieces from a wide variety of sources. It’s an everevolving process, and she has several tips to make a grouping look curated.

-

• FIND BALANCE. Ashley emphasizes finding the right balance of items, choosing either to use two or three pieces from a collection or using those pieces exclusively. “Either you need to have a minimal amount of something, or you need to have a ton,” she says.

• FILL A TRAY. Rather than bunching items directly on the coffee table or countertop, collect large groups on a tray, blending old and new accessories together. “You can have more things on that tray without it looking cluttered,” Ashley says.

• ANALYZE A SNAPSHOT. Ashley often takes a photo of a grouping instead of trusting her eyes after staring at the vignette for so long. “It’s weird how that works,” she says. “You would be surprised.”

• MIX TEXTURES. Integrating plants, shiny metals and woven baskets and fabrics provides enough variation to make your styling interesting. “Having different textures makes something feel more lively and cozy,” Ashley says.

• KNOW YOURSELF. Know your own shopping habits and use those to help decide whether to buy an item. For Ashley, the items she loves instantly are often the ones she’s ready to change more quickly. “It seems that things I’m unsure of at first are the best,” she says. If you have the opposite experience, use that to help you decide what will work best in your home.
