SAVE or SPLURGE

-

It can be tricky to know when to spend and save on your build or renovation. Designer Ashley Grech shares the smartest places to splurge in to get the best value increase on your kitchen—and the most bang for your buck.

• APPLIANCES. Appliances are the workhorses of the kitchen. They’re in constant daily use, so invest in good quality that will last and perform well. (For tips on choosing kitchen appliances, see page 38.)

• COUNTERTOPS. Just as your appliances get lots of use, so too do your countertops. Not only are they constantly in the field of vision, but they also can get some rough treatment—from food chopping to holding heavy (and sometimes hot) pans. If you have little ones, countertops may even get occasional crayon marks. In order to prevent damage, get high quality, durable countertops.

• CABINETS. Cabinets set the stage for the style and functionality of your kitchen, and hold everything from pots and pans to pantry items. Well-designed cabinets will allow you to flow through your kitchen as you open and close the doors to get your cooking necessities.
