BOSTON, MA SKINNER, INC.
American & European
Works of Art
On January 26, Skinner Inc. held its two-tier American & European Works of Art sale with a session dedicated to prints and a second dedicated to paintings and sculpture.
Eight lithographs by Ashcan School artist George Bellows were the highlight of the prints segment, with his piece Preliminaries (est. $15/25,000)—one of his earliest boxing subject lithographs—selling for $25,830.
The paintings category of the sale—and the top lot of all items—was led by N.C. Wyeth’s Scribner’s Magazine illustration Wallace Draws the King’s Sword, which was created around 1921 for the first edition of The Scottish Chiefs by Jane Porter. Once in the collection of Charles Scribner’s sons and descended within the publisher’s family to its current owner, the work more than doubled its low estimate at $339,000.
