Eldred’s August sale features works from the collection of Carl and Sonia Schmitt and notable Massachusetts paintings
Eldred’s Summer Americana Auction, taking place this August on Cape Cod, will feature folk art and other Americana from the collection of Carl and Sonia Schmitt of Walla Walla, Washington, along with more than 200 paintings spanning from the 18th century to contemporary works.
Highlights from the Schmitt Collection includes Ammi Phillips’ Portrait of Jane Kinney, estimated to fetch between $3,000 and $4,000, as well as portraits by Jacob Maentel and William Matthew Prior. Other notable works include a carved and painted cigar store figure of Punch as a jester (est. $100/150,000) and a Cushing & White “Goddess of Liberty” molded copper weather vane (est. $20/30,000).
Outside the collection, the sale includes multiple pieces by important Massachusetts artists. Clifford Ashley’s Center Street, New Bedford, looking across to Fairhaven Massachusetts is housed in its original hand-carved frame, likely created by the artist, and is expected to fetch between $15,000 and $25,000, and Gerrit Albertus Beneker’s From My Studio Window, Provincetown is estimated at $7,000 to $9,000. Other Massachusetts paintings include Harry Sunter’s Mending the Nets (est. $20/30,000), a watercolor of Boston by Aiden Lassell Ripley that is estimated at $4,000 to $6,000, and a William Edward Norton coastal scene, estimated at $10,000 to $15,000.
More notable paintings from the sale include Lordship Light, a lighthouse scene featuring a fisherman and black Labrador retriever by Stevan Dohanos, estimated at $30,000 to $50,000, while an oil of a man and his son protecting a chicken coop by Lynn Bogue Hunt carries an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.
Eldred’s president and director of its fine art department Joshua Eldred says,“this August sale is one of the most diverse sales in recent memory, with wonderful examples in all collecting categories. So far this year we have seen a renewed interest in many areas including American furniture, so I am excited to see how the market reacts to the sale.” He also notes that the summer sale reflects the auction house’s decadelong effort to expand its painting department in both volume and quality.
The Summer Americana Auction will take place at Eldred’s headquarters in East Dennis, Massachusetts, over three sessions on August 1, 2 and 3, all beginning at 10 a.m.
