Imaginary nation
On view through July 3 at Ricco/maresca Gallery in New York is Renaldo Kuhler: Rocaterrania, showcasing the work of scientific illustrator Renaldo Kuhler.throughout his career, Kuhler created hundreds of plates for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, illustrating diverse plants and wildlife for scientific journals, reference books and exhibits. The exhibition at Ricco/ Maresca Gallery, however, explores Kuhler’s vast imagination, showcasing artwork that accompanied a fully-realized fictional world the artist himself invented—that of Rocaterrania, a tiny sovereign nation on the border of New York and Canada with its own unique government, language and social system.
