Myth Meets Modernism: the Manuel Álvarez Bravo Portfolio features a portfolio of 15 prints hand-selected by the artist in the late 1970s. the portfolio showcases the career of the prodigious photographer, who hailed from Mexico, and explores his fascination with myth, folklore and death. Bravo’s subjects, like those of his contemporaries Modotti, weston and Strand, are seen through a distinctly modernist lens. However, the photographer’s frequent juxtaposition of mundane subjects set against the Mexican landscape create complex and mysterious compositions. The exhibition will be on view until August 4.
