EAST DENNIS, MA ELDRED’S JULY 25 Marine Sale

Eldred’s hosts its fourth consecutiv­e Marine Art sale on July 25 with antique scrimshaw, paintings, navigation­al instrument­s, ship models and maritime art hitting the block. Leading the day will be the scrimshaw category with 250 pieces arriving at auction, including two lots of whale teeth engraved by Edward M. Burdett that carry estimates of $320,000 to $380,000 and $150,000 to $250,000.

In the paintings category of the auction, there will be important works by

James Edward Butterswor­th, Montague Dawson and

John Mecray. Butterswor­th is represente­d by three small ship portraits that measure around 7 by 12 inches each, while Mecray’s Flying Cloud (est. $30/50,000) is being sold to benefit IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport, Rhode Island. Dawson’s The Storm Jetty (est. $70/100,000)—done in the artist’s recognized fine detail—depicts a harbor scene of boats being repaired.a sailing painting by Alfred Thompson Bricher has an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000, and Steel to Starboard, by Thomas Hoyne, looks to fetch between $15,000 and $25,000.

LOS ANGELES, CA BONHAMS AUGUST 6 California and Western Paintings and Sculpture

On August 6, Bonhams will host its next California and Western Paintings and Sculpture sale featuring artwork by some of the most recognized names of

the genres. Included in the auction will be two boat scenes: a circa 1930 painting by August Gay titled Fishing Boat Around (est. $60/80,000) and Armin Hansen’s Sailboats at Monterey Bay, a circa 1925 painting depicting one of the artist’s most recognized subjects.the Hansen is expected to sell between $40,000 and $60,000. Selden Connor Gile is represente­d in the auction by Alameda Slough (est. $15/25,000), which depicts a swamp in Alameda, California. There also will be a work by Taos Society of Artists member Eanger Irving Couse coming to market.the work, titled The Belt Maker, features a familiar subject for the artist, who often painted Native Americans going about their daily lives.the piece has an estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.

THOMASTON, ME THOMASTON PLACE AUCTION GALLERIES AUGUST 23-25 Summer Auction

A large inventory of fine art will arrive at market during Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ three-day Summer Auction, August 23 to 25. As the auction house explains, “Sourced from New England estates and major nationwide collection­s, the sale will offer a virtual tour of America, past and present, through its diversity of artistic offerings.” Birchwood, a 1948 ink and watercolor painting by Andrew Wyeth, is one of the standouts of the sale.

The piece depicts chopped wood at a farm in Cushing, Maine, and is expected to sell between $50,000 and $75,000.A rural scene by Gerturde Hosford Fiske titled Clock Tower Barn, Goose Rocks Beach, Maine (est. $8/12,000) is another notable piece in the sale.

There also will be works available from Waldo Peirce, John Marin, Robert Henri, Samuel Colman, Cy Twombly, Arthur Dove, Jane Peterson and Emile Gruppe.
