Beginning September 21, Sotheby’s will be offering stunning works of American art during its mid-season sale.

Highlights from the sale include George Inness’ moody oil work St. Andrews, New Brunswick, a 32-by-42inch work estimated at $100,000 to $150,000.“It certainly feels moody and dark, very much like much of his work, but it also has a cheery subject and is very thoughtful,” says Elizabeth Goodridge, american art specialist at Sotheby’s.“it’s also impressive in scale—it’s quite large—and a really accomplished work by the artist.” Another large work in the sale is by the late Wolf Kahn, High Barn, estimated at $30,000 to $50,000. Kahn, who was famous for his landscapes done in a Color Field style, passed away at the age of 92 earlier this year. The 60-inch-wide work, filled lightly yellows and greens, comes from the Midwest. Goodridge expects his market to see enormous growth in the coming years.

Another artist who was playing with abstraction amid realism was

John Marin, who will be represented in the sale by Beach, Rocks and Sea, Maine, a gouache and watercolor on paper, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000. Another abstract work comes from Suzy Frelinghuysen, who was recognized in the mid-20th century for both her paintings and her opera singing.available in the sale is Frelinghuysen’s Untitled Abstract, an oil and collage on Masonite, expected to fetch $12,000 to $18,000.“It’s a beautiful work that you really have to see in person.there are different elements of collage, including vertical paper composition. She incorporated things like sheet music, shopping bags

and other curiosities,” the specialist says. “And it’s quite intimate in scale, so it’s very lovely.”

Also in the sale is Walter Launt Palmer’s In the Orchard, an oil on canvas estimated at $12,000 to $18,000.The impressionist work shows a woman reading a book under the shade of a tree in a magnificent park.

The 10-day sale will be held online, a rapidly growing element to the auction house, especially after the start of the pandemic. Since March 2020, Sotheby’s has held more than 130 online sales, totaling more than $230 million. In comparison, the same period of 2019 featured 46 online sales totaling $23 million.
