In sur­vival sit­u­a­tions, there is a gen­eral “rule of threes” that will help pri­or­i­tize the steps to take in es­tab­lish­ing and fol­low­ing your plan. Any kind of sur­vival kit and knowl­edge base you es­tab­lish should in­clude items and top­ics fo­cused di­rectly on these ba­sic needs.

While these rules vary by per­son and sce­nario, in gen­eral, the body can go— • Three min­utes with­out air • Three hours with­out shel­ter • Three days with­out wa­ter • Three weeks with­out food

Dur­ing a win­ter sur­vival sce­nario, fire should be con­sid­ered a part of your shel­ter plan. Ex­po­sure to the el­e­ments, such as cold, can turn any sit­u­a­tion into a disas­ter.
