Anglers Journal

ALSO SKUNKED AT SYLVAN

-

My wife and I love Anglers Journal, especially the photos. I particularly liked Shann Ray’s “Laughter Rang off Canyon Walls” in the Fall 2018 issue. Here’s my Sylvan story.

On Aug. 9, 1974, my now ex-wife, sister, 7-year-old daughter and I hiked from East Rosebud Lake up to Sylvan Lake. I had heard it held golden trout, and I was eager to catch one.

I conned the others into the hike, which was long and difficult. Once at Sylvan, we put up the two-adult tent for the four of us. It was cool and a bit rainy. I had promised them fish to eat, but I had no bites. Thankfully, my sister had brought a can of beans or stew. When I caught no fish the next day, we hiked out. They have given me crap about that godawful adventure for 44 years.

It wasn’t until I read Shann’s article in Anglers Journal and saw the photo of Sylvan Lake that I recalled our trip in detail. I love that the author also did not catch the elusive golden trout.

You might wonder how I remember the exact date of our trip? When we got home, we heard President Nixon had resigned — on Aug. 9.

I’ve sent the article to my ex-wife, now 51-year-old daughter and my sister. We all loved the memory.
