An Abundance of Animated Delights
Summer officially begins on June 21, but you wouldn’t know it by the amount of coverage we’ve already seen on the blockbuster season’s movies. Seems like we were just saying hello to the UglyDolls (yes, our affair was very brief) when Avengers: Endgame, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Godzilla: King of Monsters and Aladdin started their live-action/CG hybrid takeover of cinemas. By the time this
magazine reaches your hands, we’ll be ready for the Battle Royale between The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Toy Story 4, both of which are covered extensively in this, our big summer preview issue. (And yes, they’re even duking it out for the prime cover spot of our magazine, as we have two collector’s edition covers this month!)
Of course, this is also our big, fat Annecy issue, which is packed with lots of studio profiles, sneak peeks and news of shorts, TV series and features that will be making their debuts throughout the year. We had a lot of fun putting these previews together, and wanted to thank everyone who shared so many fun facts and behind-the-scenes tidbits about their work with us as they prepared for their big panels and presentations at the booming festival
and market in France.
Fans of well-written and beautifully designed animated shows will have to keep an eye on Disney Channel’s latest offering, Amphibia. Since the show debuts this month, we caught up with creator Matt Braly, a very talented artist and animator who is a veteran of Gravity Falls. He was kind enough to give us the scoop on what it’s like to be at the helm of such a unique and promising new venture. We have a feeling this one is going to become an audience and critical favorite very quickly. Finally, I’m thrilled to let you know that our publisher and president Jean Thoren and events director Kim Derevlany have been very busy lately planning the next edition of our World Animation and VFX Summit, which is scheduled for Nov. 3-5 in Marina del Rey, Calif. We’ll keep you posted on the spectacular lineup of talent and panels in these pages and on our website (www.animationmagazine.net) as we get closer to the actual date. If you would like to be part of this year’s panels or volunteer at the event, please contact kim@animationmagazine.net.
That’s it for now. Don’t forget to catch up on daily news on our website and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so you’ll get all the latest news and cool images from your favorite toons.
