Jolly Winter Garland
Dress up your holiday decor with this festive garland featuring snowmen, mittens and hats. You can also use the individual motifs as tree or package ornaments.
Garland: 35 inches long, excluding curls Snowman: 31/4 inches in diameter Mittens: 21/2 inches long Hat: 2 inches long, excluding Pompom
• Red Heart Super Saver medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/364 yds/ 198g per skein): 1 skein #311 white, #324 bright yellow, #512 turqua, #672 spring green and #3901 rouge
• Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Tapestry needle
• Stitch marker
• Assorted 1/2-inch black buttons: 10
• Small piece of orange felt
• White felt
• Black and white embroidery threads
• Black and orange sewing threads and sewing needle
• Craft glue (optional)
• 3/4-inch piece of heavy cardboard
Rnds 1– 4 of Snowman = 13/4 inches
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Snowman, Mittens and Hat are worked in continuous rounds. Do not join rounds or turn unless otherwise stated. Place stitch marker at beginning of rounds and move up as each round is completed. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Evenly space pieces in desired order as Garland is made.
Popcorn (pc): 4 dc in indicated sp, drop lp from hook, insert hook from front to back in top of first dc, pick up dropped lp, draw through st on hook.
Rnd 1: With white, make a slip ring (see illustration), ch 1, 6 sc in ring, do not join. Place marker (see Pattern Notes). (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around. (18 sc)
Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts] around. (24 sc)
Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts] around. (30 sc)
Rnd 6: [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts] around. Fasten off. (36 sc)
For nose, cut triangle from orange felt measuring approximately 1 inch wide x 13/4 inches long. With orange thread, sew triangle across center of Snowman.
Optional: Instead of sewing, glue nose to Snowman.
For eyes, with black sewing thread, sew pair of buttons above each nose.
For mouth, with embroidery thread, backstitch (see illustration) curved line under nose.
Make 2 each turqua and rouge & rouge and yellow.
Rnds 1 & 2: With first color, work same as rnds 1 and 2 of Snowman. (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 4: Sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in first 2 sts, sc in each of next 10 sts. (11 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc dec in first 2 sts, sc in each of next 9 sts. (10 sc)
Rnd 6: Pc (see Special Stitch) in first st, sc in each of next 9 sts. (1 pc, 9 sc)
Rnd 7: Sc dec in first 2 sts, sc in each of next 8 sts. (9 sc)
Rnd 8: Rep rnd 3. Fasten off.
Rnd 9: Join (see Pattern Notes) 2nd color in any st, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each of next 8 sts, join in beg hdc. Fasten off. (9 hdc)
Make 1 each turqua and rouge & rouge and yellow.
Rnds 1–3: With first color, work same as rnds 1–3 of Snowman. (18 sc at end of rnd 3)
Rnds 4–7: Sc in each st around. At end of last rnd, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
Rnd 8: Join 2nd color in any st, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each rem st around, join in beg hdc. Fasten off.
With 2nd color, make 3/4-inch Pompom as follows: Wrap yarn around 3/4-inch piece of heavy cardboard (the more wraps, the fuller the Pompom). Gently remove wraps from cardboard. Cut a 12-inch length of matching yarn and tie it tightly around center of wraps. Do not cut ends of this center tie. Cut ends of wraps. Fluff and trim Pompom evenly. Use ends of center tie to attach Pompom to top of Hat.
Cut 5 23/4-inch- diameter white felt circles. With white embroidery thread, sew or glue circles to WS of each Snowman.
Leaving a long beg tail, ch 16, *join in any st at top of Snowman**, ch 20, rep from * 4 times, ending last rep
