Completing the Pieced Top

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each A square.

2. Referring to Figure 1, place one A square right sides together on one end of the B rectangle; stitch on the marked line. Trim seam to 1/4" and press A to the right side.

3. Repeat step 2 with a second A square on the opposite end of B to complete the A-B unit as shown in Figure 2.

4. Sew H to the A edge of the A-B unit to complete the beard unit as shown in Figure 3; press.

5. Sew C to D along the 121/2" edges to make a C-D unit as shown in Figure 4; press.

6. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with A on each end of the C-D unit and then add G to the A side to complete the hat unit as shown in Figure 5; press.

7. Sew E to each short end of F to make the face unit as shown in Figure 6; press.

8. Join the beard, face and hat units to complete the pieced top as shown in Figure 7; press.

5. Cut out each leaf 1/8" from the seam, trim tips and batting close to seams. Cut a slit in one layer only; turn right

side out through the slit; press edges flat. Whipstitch (see page 125) edges of opening together as shown in Figure 9.

6. Transfer vein lines to leaf shapes and stitch along marked lines with matching thread to complete six leaf shapes.

7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the mustache shape and the white dot and a batting scrap.

8. Using doubled, knotted white thread, sew gathering stitches up the center of the mustache; pull thread to gather tightly and wrap thread around the center twice as shown in Figure 10. Knot thread but do not clip.

9. Prepare a pink tonal cover button using the 11/8" cover button kit, referring to manufacturer's instructions.

10. Tack the mustache between the face and beard units using the unclipped thread.

11. Sew the two black buttons in place in the center of the face unit about 5/8" apart for eyes.

12. Arrange four prepared leaf shapes on the H strip with the top points right at the seam with equal spaces between, referring to Figure 11. Stitch through the center vein line to attach.
