Ma­te­ri­als listed make 1 place mat. • Scraps green dot, cream dot, red dot, gold tonal, and medium and dark blue tonals • 1 fat eighth brown dot • 1 fat quar­ter tan dot • 1/4 yard red tonal • Back­ing to size • Bat­ting to size • Thread • 2( 3/ 16"- di­am­e­ter) black shank

but­tons • 1/2 yard 17"-wide fusi­ble web • Scrap medium-weight fusi­ble

in­ter­fac­ing • Tem­plate ma­te­rial (op­tional) • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies


Ap­ply medium-weight fusi­ble in­ter­fac­ing to the wrong side of the cream dot. Pre­pare the ap­pliqué pieces for fusi­ble ap­pliqué us­ing the full-size mo­tif given in the in­sert and re­fer­ring to Raw-edge Fusi­ble Ap­pliqué on page 124.

From brown dot:

• Cut 1 (2" x 20") strip. Sub­cut strip into 1 (2" x 121/2") B strip.

From tan dot:

• Cut 1 (121/2" x 20") strip. Sub­cut strip into 1 (121/2" x 14") A rec­tan­gle.

From red tonal:

• Cut 2 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

Com­plet­ing the Place Mat

Re­fer to Raw-edge Fusi­ble Ap­pliqué on page 124 for all ap­pliqué steps.

1. Ar­range and fuse the pre­pared branch at one 121/2" edge of A, 41/2" up from the bot­tom edge as shown in Fig­ure 1. 2. Ar­range and fuse re­main­ing ap­pliqué pieces to A in nu­mer­i­cal or­der re­fer­ring to the full-size ap­pliqué mo­tif given in the in­sert.

3. Ma­chine blan­ket-stitch around each shape us­ing thread to match fab­rics.

4. Sew the B strip to the ap­pliquéd A rec­tan­gle to com­plete the place mat top; press.

5. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 120.

6. Quilt as de­sired.

7. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 120.

8. Sew the two black but­tons in place for eyes re­fer­ring to full-size mo­tif for place­ment to fin­ish. •
