Pat­tern Notes

Weave in loose ends as work pro­gresses. Do not join rounds un­less other­wise in­di­cated. Use stitch marker to mark be­gin­ning of rounds and move marker as work pro­gresses. Chain-3 at be­gin­ning of row counts as first dou­ble cro­chet un­less other­wise stated.

Head

Rnd 1: Beg at top of Head with buff, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join, place marker (see Pat­tern Notes). (6 sc)

Fin­ish­ing

Stuff Head and Body with fiber­fill, us­ing less fiber­fill at bot­tom. With ta­pes­try nee­dle weave rem length through rem sts of rnd 33, pull tightly, do not fas­ten off. To make Joseph stand well, push ta­pes­try nee­dle in bot­tom cen­ter and pull through st in first blue rnd, pull to in­dent bot­tom and se­cure.

Em­broi­der a blue straight stitch (see il­lus­tra­tion on page 125) be­tween each long sc.

With black em­broi­dery floss, em­broi­der French knot (see il­lus­tra­tion on page 125) eyes and back­stitch (see il­lus­tra­tion on page 125) mouth cen­tered be­low eyes. With warm brown, em­broi­der beard with straight stitches in var­i­ous lengths.

Arm

Make 2.

Row 1: With soft white start­ing at top of Arm, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (4 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3: Rep row 2.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next sc, turn. (6 sc)

Row 5: Rep row 2.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, turn. (8 sc)

Row 7: Rep row 2, change color to spring green, turn.

Rows 8–10: Rep row 2. At the end of row 10, leav­ing a 12-inch length, fas­ten off. Fold Arm in half length­wise and match­ing col­ors, sew seam; do not sew bot­tom edge of row 10 closed.

Hand

Make 2.

Row 1: With buff, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn.

Rows 2–5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At the end of row 5, leav­ing a 6-inch length, fas­ten off. Fold Hand in half and sew side tog. Leav­ing 2 rows of Hand be­low Arm, tuck wrist edge in Arm open­ing and se­cure.

Sew each Arm to shoul­der area of Joseph.

Cape

Row 1: With blue, ch 31, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (30 sc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pat­tern Notes), dc in each rem st across, change color to spring green, turn. (30 dc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, chang­ing color to corn­meal, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, chang­ing color to blue, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 6: Ch 3, dc in each sc across, chang­ing color to corn­meal, turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each dc across, chang­ing color to spring green, turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, chang­ing color to blue, turn.

Row 9: Rep row 5.

Rows 10–18: Rep rows 2–9. At the end of row 18, do not turn.

Rnd 19: Now work­ing in rnds, ch 1, sc in each st around outer edge, work­ing 3 sc in each cor­ner of Cape, join (see Pat­tern Notes) in beg sc. Fas­ten off.

Cape Tie

With warm brown, ch 80, fas­ten off. Place Cape on top of Head, place Tie around Head and knot to se­cure. Tack Tie to Cape and Head to se­cure.

Mary

Head

Rnd 11: Sc in each sc around, chang­ing color to soft white. (12 sc)

With cherry red em­broi­der French knots be­tween each long sc. With black em­broi­dery floss, em­broi­der French knot eyes and back st mouth cen­tered be­low eyes. Ap­ply a small amount of pink blush on each cheek.

Arm

Make 2.

Rows 2–10: Ch 1, with soft white only, sc in each st across, turn. At the end of row 10, leav­ing a 12-inch length, fas­ten off. Fold Arm in half length­wise and sew seam; do not sew bot­tom edge of row 10 closed.

Hand

Make 2.

Rows 1–5: Rep rows 1–5 of Hand same as for Joseph.

Sew each Arm to shoul­der area of Mary.

Cape

Row 1: With blue, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 10 chs, 3 sc in last ch, work­ing on op­po­site side of foun­da­tion ch, sc in each of next 11 chs, turn. (25 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in each of next 11 sc, turn. (28 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each of next 11 sc, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times, sc in each of next 11 sc, turn. (31 sc)

Body

Rnd 1: Beg at bot­tom of Body, with spring green, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, place marker.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: [Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 3 times. (15 sc)

Rnds 4– 8: Sc in each sc around.

Rnd 9: [Sc in each of next 3 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc] 3 times, leav­ing a 10-inch length of yarn, fas­ten off. (12 sc)

Stuff Body lightly. Tuck Baby's neck in top open­ing of rnd 9 and sew in place. With black em­broi­dery floss, em­broi­der French knot eyes and back st smil­ing mouth cen­tered be­low eyes. Ap­ply small amount of pink blush on cheeks.

Fin­ish­ing

Sew Baby Je­sus cra­dled in Mary's arms. Place Mary's Cape on and with rem length of yarn se­cure Cape around Mary and Baby Je­sus. •
