• Red pearl cot­ton

• 16 ( 5/8") bone- color but­tons

• 6 yards black jumbo rick­rack

• Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

Cut­ting From dark red mot­tled:

• Cut 2 (3" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into (16) 3" A squares.

From light-color scraps:

• Cut scraps into (13/4"-wide) strips. Sub­cut strips into 16 pieces each as fol­lows: (13/4" x 3") B, (13/4" x 41/4") C, (13/4" x 51/2") F, (13/4" x 63/4") G, (13/4" x 8") J and (13/4" x 91/4") K.

From dark-color scraps:

• Cut scraps into (13/4"-wide) strips. Sub­cut strips into 16 pieces each

as fol­lows: (13/4" x 41/4") D, (13/4" x 51/2") E, (13/4" x 63/4") H, (13/4" x 8") I, (13/4" x 91/4") L and (13/4" x 101/2") M.

From medium red and medium green mot­tleds:

• Cut 1 each (101/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strips into (20) (13/4" x 101/2") strips each for N (red) and O (green mot­tled).

From black tonal:

• Cut 2 (13/4" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 25 (13/4") P squares.

From dark green print:

• Cut 5 (21/4" by fab­ric width) strips. Join strips on short ends to make one long strip; press seams open. Sub­cut strip into 4 (463/4") Q strips. • Cut 5 (21/4" by fab­ric width) strips for bind­ing.

From black print:

• Cut 4 (21/4") R squares.

Com­plet­ing the Blocks

1. Sew B to A; press seam to­ward B. Re­peat with all A and B pieces.

2. Con­tinue adding pieces to the block cen­ters in al­pha­bet­i­cal or­der to com­plete a to­tal of 16 Log Cabin blocks as shown in Fig­ure 1, press­ing seams away from the block cen­ter af­ter each ad­di­tion.

Com­plet­ing the Quilt

1. Join four Log Cabin blocks with five N strips to make a block row re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 2; press seams to­ward N strips. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four block rows.

2. Join four O strips with five P squares to make a sash­ing row re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 3; press seams to­ward O strips. Re­peat to make a to­tal of five sash­ing rows.

3. Join the block rows with the sash­ing rows, be­gin­ning and end­ing with a sash­ing row, to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward the sash­ing rows.

4. Sew a Q strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press seams to­ward the Q strips.

5. Sew an R square to each end of each re­main­ing Q strip; press seams to­ward the Q strips. Sew the Q-R strips to the re­main­ing sides of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the pieced top; press seams to­ward the Q-R strips.

6. Layer, quilt and pre­pare bind­ing re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 120. Note: Use clear ny­lon monofil­a­ment for quilt­ing.

7. Cut four 52" lengths black jumbo rick­rack; pin one length to each side of the pieced top re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 4; ma­chine-baste in place to hold.

8. Cut the bind­ing strip into four 52" lengths.

9. Pin the raw edge of one bind­ing strip to one edge of the quilt top, on top of the jumbo rick­rack as shown in Fig­ure 5; re­peat on the op­po­site edge of the quilt top. Stitch in place. Trim ends even as shown in Fig­ure 6.

10. Turn the bind­ing to the back side and hand-stitch in place with rick­rack ex­tend­ing at the edges of the quilt top.

11. Cen­ter and stitch the re­main­ing two bind­ing strips on the re­main­ing sides of the quilted top; trim ends to 1/2". Turn ends in as shown in Fig­ure 7.

12. Turn the bind­ing to the back side and hand-stitch in place as in Step 10.

13. Sew a 5/8" bone- color but­ton to the A cen­ter of each block us­ing red pearl cot­ton to fin­ish. •
