• Lion Brand Yarn Kitchen Cot­ton medium (worsted) weight cot­ton yarn (2 oz/99 yds/ 57g per ball):

1 ball #098 vanilla • Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cot­ton medium (worsted) weight mer­cer­ized cot­ton yarn (31/2 oz/ 186 yds/100g per ball):

1 ball #126 café au lait

• Size I/9/5.5mm cro­chet hook or size

needed to ob­tain gauge • Ta­pes­try nee­dle • 11/2-inch-square piece of card­board

Gauge

7 sc = 2 inches; 4 sc rows = 1 inch

Pat­tern Notes

To in­crease width of the Mug Rug, in­crease num­ber of be­gin­ning chains in mul­ti­ples of 6. Weave in loose ends as work pro­gresses. When chang­ing color, carry and work over color not in use on wrong side of piece. Do not cut or fas­ten off un­less other­wise stated.

When work­ing in spike clus­ter, do not count or work in clos­ing chain-1.

Spe­cial Stitch Spike clus­ter (spk cl):

In­sert hook 2 sts to right of next st 1 row be­low, yo and pull up a lp, in­sert hook 1 st to right of next st 2 rows be­low, yo and pull up a lp, in­sert hook in next st 3 rows be­low, yo and pull up a lp, in­sert hook in first st to left of next st 2 rows be­low, yo and pull up a lp, in­sert hook in 2nd st to left of next st 1 row be­low, yo and pull up a lp, yo, draw through all 6 lps on hook, ch 1 to close (does not count as a st).

Mug Rug Row 1 (RS):

With color A (vanilla), ch 20, start­ing in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Turn. (19 sc)

Rows 2– 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, chang­ing color (see Stitch Guide) to color B (café au lait) in last st of last row. Turn. (19 sc)

Row 7: Car­ry­ing color A along WS

(see Pat­tern Notes), ch 1, sc in first 3 sc, *work a spk cl (see Spe­cial Stitch), sc in next 5 sc*, rep be­tween * across, end­ing with sc in each of last 3 sc. Change to color A and cut color B. Turn. (3 spk cls, 16 sc)

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sc, * sc in spk cl (see Pat­tern Notes), sc in next 5 sc*, rep be­tween * across, end­ing with sc in each of last 3 sc. Turn. (19 sc)

Rows 9–12: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, chang­ing color to color B in last st of last row. Turn. (19 sc)

Row 13: Car­ry­ing color A along WS, ch 1, sc in first 6 sc, *work a spk cl, sc in next 5 sc*, rep be­tween * across, end­ing with sc in last st. Change to color A and cut color B. Turn. (2 spk cls, 17 sc)

Row 14: Ch 1, sc in first 6 sc, *sc in spk cl, sc in next 5 sc*, rep be­tween * across, end­ing with sc in last st. Turn. (19 sc)

Rows 15–18: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, chang­ing color to color B in last st of last row. Turn. (19 sc)

Rows 19 & 20: Rep rows 7 and 8.

Rows 21–24: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. At end of last row, fas­ten off. (19 sc)

Tas­sel Make 4.

Wrap yarn about 10 times around card­board, end­ing with yarn at bot­tom of square. Thread a short strand of yarn through top of wraps and tie tightly. Cut lower end of wraps and re­move square. Wrap a short strand around tas­sel, cen­tered a short dis­tance be­low top to form tas­sel neck, and tie tightly in a knot. Draw ends down through tas­sel neck to in­side of tas­sel. Us­ing yarn tails at the top of the tas­sel, tie tas­sel to cor­ner. •
