Granny’s Gingham Lapghan
Traditional gingham plaid gets a trendy updated look when crocheted with 2 strands of worsted-weight yarn and a large hook!
36 inches wide x 46 inches long
• Lion Brand Wool-ease medium (worsted) weight wool/acrylic yarn (3 oz/197 yds/ 85g per skein): 6 skeins #138 cranberry 5 skeins #99 fisherman
• Size L/11/8mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
• Tapestry needle
With 2 strands of yarn held tog, 10 dc = 4 inches; 5 dc rows = 4 inches 1 Granny Square = 5 inches square
Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. For granny squares, you will only be working into chain spaces. Skip all stitches unless otherwise specified.
Lapghan Granny Square
Make 12 with 2 strands of fisherman, 20 with 2 strands of cranberry and 31 with 1 strand of fisherman and 1 strand of cranberry.
Rnd 1 (RS): Holding 2 strands of yarn tog, ch 4, join (see Pattern Notes) to form a ring, ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, join in top of beg ch-3. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 2: Turn, sl st in first ch-2 sp (see Pattern Notes), ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, [ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, ch 1, 3 dc in beg ch-2 sp, ch 2, join in top of beg ch-3. (24 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 4 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 3: Turn, sl st in first ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp] 3 times, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in beg ch-2 sp, ch 2, join in top of beg ch-3. (36 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 8 ch-1 sps)
Fasten off, leaving 42– 45 inch ending tails on fisherman and cranberry squares for later joining.
Arrange squares as shown in assembly diagram.
With RS tog and working through the WS lp only on each square, sew squares tog with a whipstitch seam (see illustration). At each seam between 2 squares, there should always be 1 multicolored square and 1 solid- colored square. Holding 2 long ending tails of solid color tog, sew each of these seams.
With RS facing and holding 2 strands of cranberry tog, join in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1, [ignoring seams between squares, sc in each st and in each ch sp across to next corner ch-2 sp, 3 sc in corner ch-2 sp] 4 times, join in first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (420 sc: 89 sc across each short edge, 115 sc across each long edge, 3 sc in each corner)
Weave in each strand of yarn individually, not holding 2 tog.
