Ma­te­ri­als

• 1/4 yard green solid*

• 1/2 yard black solid*

• 7/8 yard white solid*

• 7/8 yard red solid*

• Back­ing to size

• Bat­ting to size

• Thread

• Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

*Bella Solids from United No­tions/moda used to make sam­ple.

Cut­ting From green solid:

• Cut 1 (33/4" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 4 (33/4" x 73/ 8") H rec­tan­gles.

From black solid:

• Cut 1 (2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 4 (2") C squares.

• Cut 4 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

From white solid:

• Cut 1 (2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 4 each 2" x 31/2" A rec­tan­gles and 2" B squares.

• Cut 4 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 4 each 21/2" x 261/2" K strips and 21/2" x 121/2" I strips.

• Cut 2 (33/4" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 8 (33/4" x 73/ 8") D rec­tan­gles and 5 (31/2") E squares.

• Cut 1 (31/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 11 (31/2") E squares (16 to­tal).

From red solid:

• Cut 4 (31/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 4 (31/2" x 301/2") L strips and 5 (21/2") J squares.

• Cut 1 (33/4" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 4 (33/4" x 73/ 8)" F rec­tan­gles.

• Cut 1 (61/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 4 (61/2") G squares.

Com­plet­ing the Blocks

1. Layer a D rec­tan­gle with an F rec­tan­gle, both right side up. Cut from the top left to the bot­tom right to make two each D and F tri­an­gles as shown in Fig­ure 1; pin each lay­ered pair to keep to­gether. Re­peat to cut four each D and F tri­an­gles.

2. Re­peat step 1 ex­cept cut from the lower left cor­ner to the top right cor­ner to make two each re­verse D and F tri­an­gles, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1. Re­peat to cut four each re­verse D and F tri­an­gles; pin each lay­ered pair to keep to­gether.

3. Sew a D tri­an­gle to an F tri­an­gle to make a D-F unit as shown in Fig­ure 2; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four units.

4. Sew one re­verse D tri­an­gle to one re­verse F tri­an­gle to make a re­verse D-F unit as shown in Fig­ure 3; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four units.

5. Re­peat steps 1– 4 with D and H rec­tan­gles to make four each D-H and re­verse D-H units as shown in Fig­ure 4.

6. Sew B to C and add A to com­plete one A-B- C unit as shown in Fig­ure 5; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four A-B- C units.

7. To com­plete one Rose­bud block, select one A-B- C unit, one G square, three E squares and two each D-F, re­verse D-F, D-H and re­verse D-H units.

8. Sew the re­verse D-F unit to one side and the D-H unit to the op­po­site side of G to com­plete the cen­ter row as shown in Fig­ure 6; press.

9. Sew the D-F unit be­tween the A-B- C unit and an E square to com­plete the top row as shown in Fig­ure 7; press.

10. Sew an E square to each end of the re­verse D-H unit to com­plete the bot­tom row as shown in Fig­ure 8; press.

11. Sew the top and bot­tom rows to the cen­ter row to com­plete one Rose­bud block as shown in Fig­ure 9; press.

12. Re­peat steps 7–11 to com­plete a to­tal of four Rose­bud blocks.

Com­plet­ing the Top­per

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for com­plet­ing the top­per.

1. Join two Rose­bud blocks with an I strip to make a row; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond row.

2. Join two I strips with a J square to make the sash­ing row; press.

3. Join the two block rows with the sash­ing row to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press.

4. Sew a K strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press. Sew a J square to each end of each re­main­ing K strip; press. Sew these strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

5. Sew L strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

6. Sew an E square to each end of each re­main­ing L strip; press. Sew these strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the pieced top; press.

7. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110.

8. Quilt as de­sired.

9. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110 to fin­ish. l
