Batik Ta­ble Run­ner

Make a stun­ning ta­ble run­ner just in time for Valen­tine’s Day, or change the col­ors to make it work for any time of the year.

• 3/8 yard rasp­berry red batik

• 3/8 yard bub­blegum pink batik

• 5/8 yard black solid

• 11/2 yards muslin

• Back­ing to size

• Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

Cut­ting

Pre­pare tem­plates for ap­pliqué pieces us­ing pat­terns given. Cut and pre­pare for fusible ap­pliqué re­fer­ring to Raw-edge Fusible Ap­pliqué on page 20.

From light gray solid:

• Cut 3 (21/2" x 20") strips. Sub­cut strips into 3 (21/2" x 16") B strips.

From light gray print batik:

• Cut 1 (31/2" x 20") strip.

Sub­cut strip into 1 (31/2" x 16") C strip.

• Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip.

Sub­cut strip into 1 (51/2" x 16") G strip.

From dark gray print batik:

• Cut 1 (63/4" x 20") strip. Sub­cut strip into 1 (63/4" x 16") A strip.

• Cut 2 (51/2" x 20") strips. Sub­cut strips into 2 (51/2" x 16") H strips.

From black/gray print batik:

• Cut 2 (7" x 20") strips. Sub­cut strips into 2 (7" x 16") E strips.

From rasp­berry red batik:

• Cut 1 (33/ 8" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 9 (33/ 8") K squares.

• Cut 2 (3" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 2 (3" x 241/2") M strips and 2 (21/4" x 14") N strips.

From bub­blegum pink batik:

• Cut 1 (33/ 8" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 9 (33/ 8") L squares.

From black solid:

• Cut 2 (31/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strip into 2 (31/2" x 16") D strips and 4 (21/4" x 3") O rec­tan­gles.

• Cut 4 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

From muslin:

• Cut 1 (16" x 49") base rec­tan­gle along length of fab­ric.

Com­plet­ing the Pieced Cen­ter

1. With right side up, cen­ter and align one 16" edge of the A strip with one 16" edge of the muslin strip; baste along the long edge to hold as shown in Fig­ure 1.

2. Place a B strip right sides to­gether on the A strip and stitch across through all lay­ers as shown in Fig­ure 2; press the B strip down.

3. Con­tinue adding strips to the muslin base to com­plete the pieced cen­ter as shown in Fig­ure 3.

4. Trim the pieced cen­ter to 14" x 47".

Com­plet­ing the Ap­pliqué

Re­fer to Raw-edge Fusible Ap­pliqué on page 20 for ap­pliqué in­struc­tions.

1. Ar­range and fuse the pre­pared cir­cle piece on the pieced cen­ter.

2. Ma­chine blan­ket-stitch around edge of cir­cle us­ing thread to match fab­ric.

3. Ar­range and fuse the pe­tal pieces around the cir­cle edges re­fer­ring to the cir­cle pat­tern for po­si­tion­ing.

4. Ar­range and fuse the heart shapes to the pieced cen­ter re­fer­ring to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for po­si­tion­ing.

5. Ma­chine blan­ket-stitch around edges of hearts and pe­tals with thread to match fab­rics.

6. Us­ing ma­chine dec­o­ra­tive stitches, top­stitch over the seams, join­ing the strips to the muslin base re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 4 for an ex­am­ple.

Com­plet­ing the Run­ner

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for com­plet­ing the ta­ble run­ner.

1. Draw a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of each L square.

2. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 5, place an L square right sides to­gether with a K square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press open to make two K-L units. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 18 K-L units.

3. Ar­range and join nine K-L units and one M strip to make a side strip re­fer­ring to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for po­si­tion­ing; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond side strip, sewing the op­po­site end of the K-L strip to M.

4. Place a side strip right sides to­gether with one long edge of the pieced cen­ter and stitch through all lay­ers; press strip to the right side. Re­peat with sec­ond side strip, turn­ing strip with K-L units on op­po­site end.

5. Sew an O rec­tan­gle to each end of each N strip; press. Sew these strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter through all lay­ers to com­plete the ta­ble run­ner top; press.

6. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110.

7. Quilt as de­sired.

8. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110 to fin­ish. l
