Bear Paw Hugs Ta­ble Top­per

Turn your ta­ble into a show­place for your quilt­ing. This sim­ple block and ap­pliqué piece can be made in an af­ter­noon.

Ma­te­ri­als

• 1 fat quar­ter medium blue batik

• 1 fat quar­ter light blue batik

• 5/8 yard white solid

• 5/8 yard dark blue batik

• Back­ing to size

• Bat­ting to size*

• Thread

• 1/4 yard 17"-wide fusible web*

• Tem­plate ma­te­rial

• Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

*Warm & White bat­ting and Steam-a-seam 2 fusible web from The Warm Com­pany used to make sam­ple.

Cut­ting

Pre­pare tem­plate for the ap­pliqué piece us­ing pat­tern given. Cut and pre­pare for fusible ap­pliqué as di­rected on pat­tern and re­fer­ring to Raw-edge Fusible Ap­pliqué on page 20.

From medium blue batik:

• Cut 2 (27/ 8" x 20") strips. Sub­cut strips into 8 (27/ 8") A1 squares and 1 (21/2") F square.

From light blue batik:

• Cut 1 (41/2" x 20") strip.

Sub­cut strip into 4 (41/2") D squares.

• Cut 2 (27/ 8" x 20") strips.

Sub­cut strips into 8 (27/ 8") A2 squares.

From white solid:

• Cut 2 (27/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 16 (27/ 8") B squares and

8 (21/2") C squares.

• Cut 2 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 4 each 21/2" x 61/2" E rec­tan­gles

and 21/2" x 81/2" I rec­tan­gles.

• Cut 4 (11/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 2 each 11/2" x 221/2" K, 11/2" x 201/2" J, 11/2" x 161/2" H and 11/2" x 141/2" G strips.

From dark blue batik:

• Cut 4 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 2 each 21/2" x 221/2" L strips and 21/2" x 261/2" M strips.

• Cut 3 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

Com­plet­ing the Pieced Units

1. Draw a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of each B square.

2. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1, place a B square right sides to­gether with an A1 square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press open to make two A1-B units. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 16 A1-B units.

3. Re­peat step 2 with A2 and B squares to make 16 A2-B units, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1.

Com­plet­ing the Blocks

1. Select four A1-B units and one each C and D square.

2. Join two A1-B units to make an A1-B row as shown in Fig­ure 2; press.

3. Sew the A1-B row to D to make a D row as shown in Fig­ure 3; press.

4. Join two A1-B units and add C to make a C row as shown in Fig­ure 4; press.

5. Sew the C row to the D row to com­plete one Bear Paw block as shown in Fig­ure 5; press.

6. Re­peat steps 1–5 to com­plete four Bear Paw blocks.

Com­plet­ing the Pieced Top

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram as needed.

1. Ar­range and join two Bear Paw blocks with an E rec­tan­gle to make a block row as shown in Fig­ure 6; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond block row.

2. Sew the F square be­tween two E rec­tan­gles to make the F row, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 6; press.

3. Join the two block rows with the F row to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press.

4. Sew a G strip to op­po­site sides and H strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

5. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 7, join two A2-B units to make an A2-B bor­der unit; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four A2-B bor­der units and four A2-B re­verse bor­der units.

6. Join one each A2-B bor­der unit and A2-B re­verse bor­der unit with an I rec­tan­gle to make a bor­der strip as shown in Fig­ure 8; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four bor­der strips.

7. Sew a bor­der strip to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

8. Sew a C square to each end of each re­main­ing bor­der strip; press. Sew these strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

9. Sew J strips to op­po­site sides and K strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

10. Sew L strips to op­po­site sides and M strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the pieced top; press.

Com­plet­ing the Ap­pliqué

Re­fer to Raw-edge Fusible Ap­pliqué on page 20 for ap­pliqué in­struc­tions.

1. Ar­range and fuse a pre­pared heart shape in the cen­ter of each I rec­tan­gle with pointed end of heart to­ward the cen­ter of the pieced top.

2. Us­ing a nar­row, close ma­chine satin stitch with thread to match fab­ric, stitch all around each fused heart.

Com­plet­ing the Top­per

1. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110.

2. Quilt as de­sired.

3. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110 to fin­ish. l
