This bell ringer is a per­fect ad­di­tion to any room with a small wall space and makes a great week­end project.

Spec­i­fi­ca­tions

Ma­te­ri­als

• 1 fat eighth red star print

• 1 fat eighth light blue mini dot

• 1/ 3 yard white solid

• 1/ 3 yard muslin (op­tional)

• 3/8 yard navy blue tonal

• 1/2 yard blue pa­tri­otic print

• Back­ing to size

• Bat­ting to size

• Thread

• Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

Cut­ting From red star print:

• Cut 1 (23/4" x 20") strip. Sub­cut strip into 1 (23/4") B square and 6 (23/ 8") A squares. Cut the B square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 4 B tri­an­gles. Cut each A square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 12 A tri­an­gles.

From light blue mini dot:

• Cut 1 (23/4" x 20") strip. Sub­cut strip into 1 (23/4") F square and 4 (23/ 8") E squares. Cut the F square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 4 F tri­an­gles. Cut each E square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 8 E tri­an­gles.

• Cut 1 (11/4" x 20") strip.

Sub­cut strip into 8 (11/4") G squares.

From white solid:

• Cut 1 (41/4" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 3 (41/4") H squares and 12 (2") I squares. Cut each H square on both di­ag­o­nals to make 12 H tri­an­gles.

• Cut 2 (11/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 2 each 1" x 61/2" J strips,

11/2" x 191/2" K strips and 11/2" x 81/2" L strips.

From muslin:

• Cut 1 (6" by fab­ric width) strip. Trim strips as per Mak­ing a Hang­ing Sleeve on page 109 to make a hang­ing sleeve if de­sired.

From navy blue tonal:

• Cut 1 (23/ 8" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 8 (23/ 8") C squares and 8 (11/4") D squares. Cut each C square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 16 C tri­an­gles.

• Cut 3 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

From blue pa­tri­otic print:

• Cut 1 (101/ 8" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 1 (101/ 8") O square, 2 (3" x 211/2") M strips and 1 (3" x 131/2") N strip. Cut the O square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 2 O tri­an­gles. Set aside 1 O tri­an­gle for an­other project.

Com­plet­ing the Pieced Units

1. Sew A to each short side of H to make an A-H unit as shown in Fig­ure 1; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four A-H units.

2. Re­peat step 1 with C and H tri­an­gles to make four C-H units, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1.

4. Sew a C tri­an­gle to an E tri­an­gle to make a C-E unit as shown in Fig­ure 2; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four C-E units.

5. Sew B to F and add E to make a B-E-F unit as shown in Fig­ure 3; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four B-E-F units.

6. Join two each D and G squares to make a D- G strip as shown in Fig­ure 4; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four D- G strips.

Com­plet­ing the Spin­ning Star Block

1. To com­plete the Spin­ning Star block, select four each C-E and A- C-H units and I squares.

2. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 5, join two C-E units to make a row; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond row. Join the rows to com­plete the cen­ter unit; press.

3. Re­peat step 1 with C, A and H tri­an­gles to make four A- C-H units, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1.

3. Sew an A- C-H unit to op­po­site sides of the cen­ter unit to com­plete the cen­ter row as shown in Fig­ure 6; press.

4. Sew an I square to each end of each re­main­ing A- C-H unit to make the top and bot­tom rows as shown in Fig­ure 7; press.

5. Sew the top and bot­tom rows to the cen­ter row to com­plete the Spin­ning Star block as shown in Fig­ure 8; press.

Com­plet­ing the Checker­board Star Block

1. To make the Checker­board Star block, select four each D- G strips, A-H units and I squares.

2. Join the four D- G strips to make the D- G unit as shown in Fig­ure 9; press.

3. Sew an A-H unit to op­po­site sides of the D- G unit to com­plete the cen­ter row as shown in Fig­ure 10; press.

4. Sew an I square to each end of the re­main­ing A-H units to make the top and bot­tom rows as shown in Fig­ure 11; press.

5. Sew the top and bot­tom rows to the cen­ter row to com­plete the Checker­board Star block as shown in Fig­ure 12; press.

Com­plet­ing the Pin­wheel Star Block

1. To com­plete the Pin­wheel Star block, select four each B-E-F and C-H units and I squares.

2. Join two B-E-F units to make a row as shown in Fig­ure 13; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond row.

3. Join the two rows to com­plete the block cen­ter as shown in Fig­ure 14; press.

4. Sew a C-H unit to op­po­site sides of the block cen­ter to com­plete the cen­ter row as shown in Fig­ure 15; press.

5. Sew an I square to each end of each re­main­ing C-H unit to com­plete the top and bot­tom rows as shown in Fig­ure 16; press.

6. Sew the top and bot­tom rows to the cen­ter row to com­plete the Pin­wheel Star block as shown in Fig­ure 17; press.

Com­plet­ing the Wall Quilt

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for com­plet­ing the wall quilt.

1. Ar­range and join the three pieced blocks with two J strips; press. Add the K strips to op­po­site long sides and L strips to the short ends to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press.

2. Sew M strips to op­po­site long sides and an N strip to one short end of the pieced cen­ter; press.

3. Sew the O tri­an­gle to the op­po­site short end of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the pieced top; press.

4. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110.

5. Quilt as de­sired.

6. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 110 to fin­ish.

7. Add a hang­ing sleeve to the top edge re­fer­ring to Mak­ing a Hang­ing Sleeve. l
