Fill a pretty pil­low with pleas­ant scents that will de­light both the giver and gif­tee of this pretty patch­work pil­low.


Fin­ished size 8 x 6 inches


• Wo­ven fab­ric fat quar­ters: 1 red (A) 1 red print (B) 1 white pat­terned

• Scraps 5 dec­o­ra­tive white pat­terned fab­rics

• White, off-white and mauve pearl cot­ton or 6-strand em­broi­dery floss

• As­sorted beads, lace, ap­pliqué

• Dried fra­grant plant ma­te­rial or other scented filler

• Em­broi­dery and bead­ing nee­dles

• Ba­sic sewing sup­plies and equip­ment

Cut­ting From red (A) fat quar­ter:

• Cut one 61/2 x 81/2-inch rec­tan­gle for pil­low back.

• Cut two 31/2 x 41/2-inch rect­an­gles for pil­low front.

From red print (B) fat quar­ter:

• Cut two 31/2 x 41/2-inch rect­an­gles for pil­low front.

From white pat­terned fat quar­ter:

• Use tem­plate (page 8) to cut one heart for ap­pliqué.

• Cut two 6 x 8-inch rect­an­gles for sa­chet bag.

Heart Ap­pliqué

1. Work­ing from the right side of the heart ap­pliqué, cover shape with small scraps of white fab­rics, turn­ing un­der and pin­ning raw edges. Note: Each fab­ric raw edge should be cov­ered by an­other fab­ric or turned un­der, ex­cept at outer edges of the heart. 2. Tack the turned-un­der edges in place with thread. Cover each seam with a dif­fer­ent shade of em­broi­dery floss or pearl cot­ton us­ing dec­o­ra­tive em­broi­dery hand or ma­chine stitches.

3. Em­bel­lish shapes as de­sired with beads, lace and/or ap­pliqué.


Use 1/4-inch seam al­lowance un­less oth­er­wise stated. Sew right sides to­gether. Press seams as you sew.

1. Sew one pil­low front A rec­tan­gle and one pil­low front B rec­tan­gle to­gether along short edges. Press. Re­peat with re­main­ing A and B pil­low front rect­an­gles. Sew A and B units to­gether along long edges, al­ter­nat­ing po­si­tions of fab­rics (Fig­ure 1). Press.

2. Cen­ter heart ap­pliqué on pieced pil­low front. Hand-ap­pliqué in place, turn­ing un­der raw edges. Work dec­o­ra­tive em­broi­dery stitch around outer edge.

3. Sew sa­chet bag rect­an­gles to­gether along one short and two long edges. Turn right side out. Fill with dried fra­grant plant ma­te­rial and hand-stitch open­ing edge closed.

4. Sew pil­low front to pil­low back along one short and two long edges. Insert sa­chet. Turn in raw edges of front and back, and hand-stitch edges to­gether.
