Hit the road for eye-opening fare on Cooking Channel and Food Network
Among the many rewards of travel are the new foods and cuisines you get to try to along the way.
Go to any corner of the country and you’ll find a food that region specializes in, be it Cajun and Creole in New Orleans, barbecue in Texas, steak in Kansas City or seafood in New England. So if you’re hitting the road this summer, a number of shows on Cooking Channel and Food Network can give you a few ideas of what’s out there.
Sunday, July 7, on Cooking, host Noah Cappe’s tours of state and county fairs on “Carnival Eats” takes him to the Arkansas State Fair in Little Rock to try a rolled icecream treat known as the Rainbow Roll and a deep-fried pina colada (yes, really), then heads to Dade City, Fla., to chow down on the sausage pizza corn dog – which is exactly what it sounds like.
Earlier that day on Food Network, the fare is considerably more exotic on “Giada in Italy,” which finds host Giada De Laurentiis taking in the best the island of Capri has to offer, then heading to the kitchen to create a limoncello and almond biscotti, torta caprese and ricotta gelato toast. Delizioso!
On Tuesday, July 9, on Cooking, “Man v. Food” host Casey Webb’s travels take him to the port city of Wilmington, N.C., where he takes on an undefeated adversary in the Pierogi Team Challenge. Also on his itinerary are a barbecue bonanza and a burrito described as “bonkers.”
The next night, Wednesday, July 10, on Cooking, Andrew Zimmern of “Delicious Destinations” turns up in Shanghai, China, where he introduces viewers to popular local dishes such as a creamy hairy crab, porkfilled dumplings, rice wine-soaked chicken and scallion pancakes.
Also that night on Cooking is the season finale of “Man Fire Food,” in which host Roger Mooking participates in a fish roast in Breaux Bridge, La., and makes a dish called ribs al pastor in Bakersfield, Calif., where he also fries fish.
Friday, July 12, on Food, Guy Fieri’s survey of “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” takes on an international flair as he tries Thai and Cuban fare in Wilmington, Del., Hawaiian food at a tiki joint Kauai and Lebanese at a place in San Diego.
Then Saturday, July 13, on Cooking it’s a twin bill of “BBQ Pitmasters,” which starts off with Lee Ann and Myron taking on all comers in the Murphysboro (Ill.) Barbecue Cook-Off. Immediately following, they’re in Kansas City, Mo., to compete in the American Royal Open, where more than 500 professional and amateur barbecue vie for over $40,000 in prizes.
