Desert Christian boys win first Heritage League meet
LOS ANGELES — The Desert Christian cross country team won its first Heritage League meet on Wednesday at Kenneth Hahn Park.
It was the first league meet for the Knights since the Desert Mountain League folded.
The Desert Christian boys won the meet with a perfect score of 15 by taking the first five spots in the varsity race that also featured Vasquez, Palmdale Aerospace Academy, Trinity Classical, Bridges, San Gabriel Academy, Faith Baptist, and Summit View West.
Sophomore Brent Roetcisender won the boys race with a time of 17 minutes and 42 seconds, junior David Caddick was second, also finishing in 17:42, junior Emerson Calhoun was third in 17:43, the same time as sophomore teammate Kody Del Frate and Daniel Caddick was fifth with a time of 17:44.
Desert Christian senior Aaron Oliver finished 16th with a time of 20:24 and junior Cameron Morgan was 30th in 21:06.
Desert Christian coach Andy Visokey said the performance was “sensational.”
“(It’s) a great start to (the) team’s tenure in the Heritage League,” Visokey said.
Vasquez finished second overall in the boys race with 64 points.
Vasquez junior Braeden Flores was sixth with a time of 18:01, junior Kyle Johnson was ninth in 18:54 and freshman Dillon Anderson was 13th (19:54).
Palmdale Aerospace finished seventh overall and was led by freshman Christopher Villegas, who was 22nd overall (20:35).
The Desert Christian girls team finished second, just one point behind Trinity Classical Academy.
Junior Megan McGrath won the girls varsity race with a time of 21:46 and freshman teammate Emily Caddick was second with a time of 21:47.
Desert Christian junior Roxi Sanchez was 11th overall in 26:06, followed by her twin sister Shyann Sanchez, who finished 12th in 26:16.
The final scoring runner for Desert Christian was sophomore Kassandra Saavedra, who finished 15th in 27:30.
Jessica Devore was 16th (28:00) and Madison Helton was 28th (31:02).
“It was frustrating losing by one point, especially with a key runner missing,” Visokey said. “(I am) hopeful the girls will win their first league title since 2016.”
Palmdale Aerospace finished fourth overall, as junior Dreena Garcia was 16th overal with a time of 26:38.
Vasquez only fielded two runners, but senior Jackie Beltran finished 12th overall (25:43) and junior Camilla Galvez was 13th (25:43).
