Plenty of ac­tiv­i­ties planned in Val­ley for Veter­ans Day

Those look­ing to honor the men and women who have served in the na­tion’s armed forces on Veter­ans Day will have a range of op­por­tu­ni­ties in events across the Val­ley Mon­day.

Lancaster Ceme­tery

Lancaster Ceme­tery’s cer­e­mony will be­gin at 9 a.m. at the Veter­ans Court of Honor. The ceme­tery is at 111 East Lancaster Blvd.

The event will honor and re­mem­ber those veter­ans from all wars and con­flicts that have served, and con­tinue to serve our coun­try. All mem­bers of the com­mu­nity are wel­come to at­tend.

Mem­bers of the An­te­lope Val­ley Blue Star Mothers will place wreaths at the ser­vice flag poles, along with mem­bers of the A.V. Ma­rine Corps League and the An­te­lope Val­ley Ceme­tery District.

The guest speaker will be U.S. Army vet­eran Gerry Rice, who served in Viet­nam as a scout dog han­dler sta­tioned two hours north of Saigon.

Now re­tired, Rice con­tin­ues his ser­vice

as a mar­riage and fam­ily ther­a­pist through the Veter­ans Ad­min­is­tra­tion’s Com­mu­nity Care Pro­gram. He spe­cial­izes in help­ing veter­ans with post-trau­matic stress and other chal­lenges from tran­si­tion from mil­i­tary to civil­ian life, as well as veter­ans’ fam­i­lies.

Joshua Memo­rial Park

Joshua Memo­rial Park, 808 East Lancaster Blvd., will hold its cer­e­mony at 11 a.m.

Prior to the cer­e­mony, mem­bers of the Boy Scouts will place flags on the graves of veter­ans through­out the ceme­tery. Those who wish to join them may ar­rive at 8:30 a.m.

AV Mo­bile Viet­nam Memo­rial Wall

As part of its 10th an­niver­sary dis­play, the An­te­lope Val­ley Mo­bile Viet­nam Memo­rial Wall will host a Veter­ans Day cer­e­mony at 11 a.m. at the Palm­dale Am­phithe­ater, 2723 West Ran­cho Vista Blvd. (Ave. P).

The cer­e­mony will be joined by guest speaker Brig. Gen. E. John Te­ichert, com­man­der of the 412th Test Wing at Ed­wards Air Force Base, and pa­tri­otic per­for­mances by Rat Pack Ricky and the Air Na­tional Guard Band of the West Brass Quin­tet.

Ev­ery vet­eran in at­ten­dance will re­ceive an ap­pre­ci­a­tion pin and there will be a spe­cial 50th Com­mem­o­ra­tive Viet­nam Vet­eran Lapel Pin pre­sen­ta­tion.

Known as the AV Wall, the memo­rial is a half­s­cale rep­lica of the Viet­nam Mem­orial black gran­ite wall on the Washington Mall that was de­signed by artist Maya Lin. It bears the names of the 58,318 Amer­i­can ser­vice­men and women killed dur­ing the Viet­nam War.

It has been on dis­play 24 hours a day at the Palm­dale Am­phithe­ater since Thurs­day.

Mo­jave Air and Space Port

Mo­jave’s an­nual Veter­ans Day cer­e­mony will be­gin at 11 a.m. at Legacy Park at the Mo­jave Air and Space Port.

The guest speaker will be

Dave Barr, a Ma­rine Corps vet­eran who served in Viet­nam then con­tin­ued his mil­i­tary ca­reer as a self-de­scribed pro­fes­sional solider across the globe.

After los­ing both legs to a land­mine ex­plo­sion, Barr be­gan a se­ries of record-set­ting treks around the world on his mo­tor­cy­cle.

The event will also fea­ture a his­toric air­craft dis­play on the flight line in front of the air­port ad­min­is­tra­tion build­ing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather per­mit­ting.

The cer­e­mony will be fol­lowed by homemade cook­ies and cof­fee pro­vided by the Mo­jave Se­niors.

Cal­i­for­nia City

The an­nual Cal­i­for­nia City Veter­ans Day ob­ser­vance will be­gin with a pa­rade at 10:45 a.m. It starts at the Amer­i­can Le­gion, 8108 Bay Ave., and will travel east down Cal­i­for­nia City Boule­vard to the Cal­i­for­nia City Memo­rial Park, 22000 Rands­burg Road.

The cer­e­mony will be­gin at 11 a.m. at the memo­rial park, fol­lowed by a re­cep­tion at the Amer­i­can Le­gion.
